Search Efforts Intensify for Brazilian Tourist Missing on Mount Rinjani
Rescuers continue the search for Juliana Marins, a Brazilian tourist believed to be stranded on the slopes of Indonesia's active volcano amid challenging weather conditions.
Rescue operations are underway in Indonesia for a Brazilian tourist, identified as 26-year-old Juliana Marins, who went missing while hiking near the crater of the active volcano Mount Rinjani. The incident occurred around 6:30 AM local time on Saturday, as she was part of a hiking group. Brazilian authorities reported that Marins fell from a cliff adjacent to the volcano's trail.
Search and rescue missions have faced significant challenges due to adverse weather conditions and rugged terrain. Initial reports indicated that rescuers heard Marins calling for help, and she appeared to be in a state of shock but was otherwise safe at that moment. However, as rescue teams descended to her believed location—approximately 984 feet below the hiking path—they were unable to locate her, despite her presence being captured on drone footage shared online.
By Sunday morning, the search took a more dire turn as drone operators noted her absence from the site. Indonesian park authorities attributed the difficulties to the dense fog which consequently hindered the use of thermal drones. By Monday, rescuers managed to get a visual on Marins but were forced to halt progress due to “climate conditions.” Family members have expressed their concern over the ongoing risk to Marins’s health, as she reportedly lacks essential supplies such as food, water, and warm clothing.
The family has vocally criticized the decision to keep the park open for tourists, asserting that hiking along the very route Marins took poses a risk. They indicate that those still on the trail are hiking while their loved one remains unaccounted for.
Members of Marins's group have described their hike as particularly arduous, noting difficult and slippery conditions exacerbated by the pre-sunrise timing and limited visibility. The Brazilian foreign ministry has communicated with the Indonesian government in oversight of the rescue efforts.
Mount Rinjani, reaching heights of over 12,000 feet, is Indonesia's second tallest volcano and is known as a popular destination for adventurers. However, previous incidents, including fatalities, have raised concerns over the safety of the climbing routes. As the search for Juliana Marins continues, authorities emphasize the importance of safety for climbers in such challenging environments.
