An overnight attack by Russian drones on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, has resulted in the tragic deaths of three individuals, according to local officials. The bombardment, which ignited several fires across residential buildings and set vehicles ablaze, forced many exhausted residents to seek refuge in bomb shelters.
This strike is part of a broader trend, as Russia has increased its drone and missile offensives in recent months, with frequent nightly bombings across various regions in Ukraine. Tuesday's attack on the capital, Kyiv, was noted as one of the war's most significant drone offensives to date.
On Wednesday, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that it successfully intercepted 49 of the 85 drones launched by Russian forces during the assault on Kharkiv. Alongside the drone strike, an Iskander-M ballistic missile was also deployed from the Kursk region of Russia, according to military sources.
While the primary devastation occurred in Kharkiv, the assault also impacted the Donetsk region, which is situated near the front lines, as well as the Odesa region, with strikes confirmed at 14 separate locations. The local police reported an additional 64 injuries from the drone attack, including nine children.
The drones targeted various civilian infrastructures, including a trolley bus depot, private homes, and multiple residential complexes. Fires erupted not only within apartments but also on a children’s playground, significantly endangering community safety.
The Odesa region experienced extensive damage, with authorities reporting destruction of houses, vehicles, and civilian boats. With Ukraine's military refraining from disclosing damages to military installations, it remains uncertain whether any were affected in this latest offensive.
Despite the ongoing conflict, stories of resilience and survival continue to emerge from the war-torn nation.
