Resilience on Stage: A Ukrainian Theater Project Offers Hope Amid Conflict
Amid the turmoil of war and isolation, a summer acting course in Kyiv reinvigorates the spirit of teenagers through creativity and performance.
In the heart of Kyiv, a summer acting course has become a beacon of hope for teenagers grappling with the despair of war. Instructor Olesia Korzhenevska, striving to create a nurturing environment for her students, started the program with a vision of joy and freedom for the youth, despite the ongoing chaos surrounding them.
With the pandemic and the protracted conflict with Russia cascading over their lives, many teens have faced isolation, fear, and uncertainty about their futures. They have lived for years under the shadow of violence and trauma, hindering their social skills and stifling their dreams.
After a heartfelt appeal on social media, the course began to attract young talent, including 16-year-old Sasha Suchyk. Sasha’s story is one of extraordinary struggle; he had previously withdrawn from the same class due to crippling depression triggered by the war's impact on his life. Having spent almost a year in a mental health facility, he became one of the first students to join the class when his mother reached out to Korzhenevska.
As rehearsals commenced for the original play, “It’s okay!” the transformative power of creative expression surfaced. The project has afforded participants, including Sasha, a chance not only to showcase their talent but also to redefine their narratives. Each performance serves as a testament to resilience, reflecting not just their individual journeys but also the collective struggles of youth in Ukraine facing tumultuous times.
Through courage, camaraderie, and the shared experience of creativity, these teenagers are uncovering paths to healing and hope, taking steps toward a future unbound by fear. The stage becomes a canvas where their voices are heard, and dreams begin to blossom again amid the wreckage of their lives caused by war.
