Iran's Port Catastrophe: Negligence and Mishandling Central to Explosion
With the death toll from the explosion at Shahid Rajaee port on the rise, authorities cite negligence as the cause and face scrutiny over safety lapses.
Iran's interior minister has confirmed that negligence played a crucial role in the catastrophic explosion and fire at Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas. The incident, which occurred Saturday, has left at least 70 people dead and over 1,000 injured. Eskandar Momeni highlighted shortcomings such as failure to adhere to safety measures, stating that "Some individuals deemed responsible" are being summoned for questioning.
The Customs Administration revealed that the cargo that ignited and exploded had not been formally declared prior to the incident. The governor of Hormozgan province, Mohammad Ashouri Taziani, mentioned that the massive blast has severely impacted nearly two-thirds of the 1,500 hectares site. Efforts to extinguish the remaining fires have reached their final stages, according to Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, the crisis management director for the province.
In a developing narrative, various authorities have denied that the explosion was related to a missile fuel shipment. Iran's defense ministry has firmly rejected claims that the blast resulted from the mishandling of sodium perchlorate, a chemical used in military applications, labeling foreign media reports as "fake news."
Contrarily, maritime risk consultancy Ambrey Intelligence and unnamed sources have suggested that improper handling of sodium perchlorate may have led to the catastrophe. As investigations continue, officials face mounting pressure to explain the apparent violations in cargo regulation and safety procedures which culminated in this tragic event.
