Minnesota Lawmaker Shooting Suspect Identified as 'Prepper'
The FBI reveals the shooter, Vance Luther Boelter, was a doomsday prepper who planned attacks on lawmakers amid false conspiracy theories.
The recent fatal shooting of Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, along with the serious wounding of Democratic State Senator John Hoffman, has taken a shocking turn as investigators reveal that the suspect, Vance Luther Boelter, was identified as a doomsday prepper. According to the FBI, Boelter's family has been part of a select group of individuals preparing for any major disasters or catastrophic events.
On Saturday, Boelter, 57, was charged with the murder of Hortman and her husband, Mark. Law enforcement officials indicated that he was also plotting attacks on other political figures. After a two-day manhunt, Vance Boelter was captured hiding in the woods, while his wife, Jenny Boelter, was intercepted by police during a traffic stop. She was reportedly en route to a friend’s house with their four children when authorities found her in possession of cash, passports, and two firearms.
Jenny Boelter had earlier received alarming communications from her husband, including a message urging her to prepare for "war" and escape from their home due to a perceived imminent threat. Although she has not been charged with any crime, she disclosed to investigators a so-called “bailout plan” created by her husband in case they needed to flee. She mentioned Boelter's business partnership involving a security company operating overseas.
Adding to the chilling details, Boelter reportedly sent a chaotic letter to the FBI, alleging that the Minnesota governor had conspired against Senator Amy Klobuchar and it was his job to eliminate her. Despite the wild claims, officials found no evidence supporting such theories. Among the items confiscated from Boelter were lists of nearly 70 political figures, including Klobuchar and Minnesota’s current U.S. senators.
As the investigation continues, the wounded Senator Hoffman, accompanied by his wife Yvette—who courageously shielded her daughter during the attack—are recovering in a hospital. The extent of the violence has prompted strong remarks from Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who condemned the incident as an act of targeted political violence.
