7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Caribbean, Tsunami Alerts Issued
A significant earthquake in the Caribbean has raised tsunamis concerns, affecting multiple countries and regions.
A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake has struck the Caribbean Sea, prompting authorities to issue tsunami warnings for several nations, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter of the earthquake is located approximately 20 miles (32.1 km) north of Honduras and 130 miles (209.2 km) south-west of the Cayman Islands.
Authorities have activated tsunami alerts for various regions including the coast of Colombia, the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Cuba. The National Weather Service has also cautioned Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands about potential hazards, warning of "strong currents and waves dangerous to those in or very near water."
The USGS has noted that large earthquakes in this area, known for its active plate boundaries, are not uncommon. A 7.5-magnitude earthquake in 2018 nearby resulted in some damage and a small tsunami. Fortunately, officials stated that the remote location of these seismic events tends to limit the potential for serious damage caused by the shaking.
As the situation develops, authorities continue to monitor the aftermath and advise residents in affected regions to stay vigilant.
