**Southern and Eastern Europe Faces Record Temperatures and Emergencies**

**As heat alerts spread across France and neighboring countries, a deepening heatwave raises alarm over health risks and environmental impacts.**

A growing heatwave across Southern and Eastern Europe has led to an alarming surge in temperatures, triggering extensive heat alerts, especially in France. Currently, 84 of France's 96 mainland departments are under an orange weather alert, signifying severe heat conditions. French Climate Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher described the escalation of the situation as "unprecedented," reflecting the seriousness of the ongoing weather crisis.

Simultaneous heat warnings have extended to regions in Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Germany, with many areas experiencing record-breaking temperatures. Notably, the small town of El Granado in Spain's Andalucía reported an alarming 46°C, while Portugal's Mora reached an even higher 46.6°C over the weekend. In reaction to the extreme heat, emergency medical services are on high alert across multiple nations, advising residents to remain indoors as much as possible.

France has seen widespread effects, including the closure of nearly 200 schools to protect children from adverse health impacts. Education Minister Elisabeth Borne is collaborating with local authorities to implement strategies that prioritize the wellbeing of students during this intense heatwave, which is projected to peak mid-week.

In Italy, 21 cities, including iconic locations such as Rome and Venice, are under the highest heat alert, compounding challenges for public health services, which have reported a significant rise in heat-related illnesses. Meanwhile, temperatures in parts of the UK approached record highs for June, adding to the overall crisis enveloping several countries.

The heatwave has escalated the risk of wildfires across various regions, particularly in southern France, where forest fires broke out in mountainous areas, necessitating evacuations and the temporary closure of key roadways. Similarly, Turkey has been battling extensive wildfires, exacerbated by strong winds, resulting in home evacuations and property destruction.

As temperatures soar, the climate implications extend beyond immediate health concerns. Rising sea temperatures in the Adriatic are promoting the spread of invasive marine species, and the rising heat is rapidly affecting alpine glaciers, contributing to their accelerated melting. While it is challenging to attribute specific weather phenomena directly to climate change, scientists recognize that such extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and intense, underscoring the urgent need for climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.

With conditions worsening in the coming days, many across Europe and the Balkans brace for rising temperatures, health risks, and environmental impacts as the summer heatwave unfolds.
