In the heart of southern Syria, Suweida has transformed from a once-calm city to a scene of terror and bloodshed, as recent sectarian clashes leave its residents in shock and despair. Rima, a 45-year-old Druze woman, recounted unimaginable horrors from her childhood home, stating, "There were bodies everywhere outside our building," during a phone interview with the BBC. The sounds of gunfire and explosions have forced her and her neighbors into hiding, as government forces and foreign fighters scour neighborhoods, searching for victims.
The violence erupted following the abduction of a Druze merchant and quickly spread, igniting long-standing tensions between Druze and Bedouin tribes. The newly appointed interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, whose leadership emerged from a regime ousted by Islamist rebels, ordered security forces into the city, claiming the need to restore order. But instead of security, many residents believe they have faced brutality, with reports documenting 594 deaths over a short period.
Nayef, another Druze resident, disclosed the grim reality: "We are collecting bodies from the streets," noting they had found corpses left in the open for up to three days. He also accused government forces of targeting wealthy households, looting, and committing acts of violence against unarmed civilians, disrupting the simplistic notion of protection.
Amidst claims of government forces attacking both sides, Israel intervened with airstrikes, professing protection for the Druze amidst a deteriorating situation, further complicating the conflict. Social media circulated videos purportedly showing government troops engaging with civilians in violent confrontations, highlighting the raw intensity of their ordeal.
UN officials have documented instances of deliberate killings of civilians, as tales of neighbors being shot or humiliated in the streets prompted distrust toward the state. Government promises of accountability have been met with skepticism, as many invoke memories of past government inaction on similar atrocities.
