Survivors Rescued from Alligator-Infested Swamp After Plane Crash in Amazon
Five individuals endure 36 hours on a submerged plane amidst alligators following an emergency landing in Bolivia’s Amazonas.
In a gripping ordeal, five individuals were rescued after a harrowing 36-hour ordeal atop a submerged plane in an alligator-infested swamp of Bolivia's Amazonas region. The small aircraft went missing while flying from Baures to Trinidad, prompting a search operation after it disappeared from radar. Local fishermen discovered the stranded plane, subsequently leading to the survivors' rescue on Friday.
Among the rescued were three women, a child, and a 29-year-old pilot named Andres Velarde. According to local authorities, all the survivors were found in “excellent condition,” despite their frightening surroundings. Velarde recounted how engine failure forced him to land the plane near the Itanomas River. He noted that during their time exposed to the elements, they were frequently surrounded by alligators, with some coming within mere meters of them.
Remarkably, the pilot believed that leaking fuel from the plane deterred the alligators from closing in on them. He also revealed that they spotted an anaconda while stranded, heightening the stakes of their survival situation. They managed to sustain themselves by consuming local cassava flour carried by one of the passengers, yet they lacked fresh water or any means of moving away from the precarious location.
After the fishing crew found the submerged wreck, a helicopter was dispatched to airlift the survivors to safety. Ruben Torres, Director of the Beni Region Health Department, expressed his relief over their safe recovery, highlighting the collaboration of various institutions that worked together in the rescue efforts. This remarkable incident underscores the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity and the importance of swift community action in emergencies.
