Netanyahu Reveals Arms Supply to Anti-Hamas Clans in Gaza
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirms government authorization to arm clans opposed to Hamas, igniting fierce debate over security implications.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly acknowledged that his government is arming clans in Gaza that are reportedly opposed to Hamas. This confirmation follows reports from Israeli media quoting defense sources stating that Netanyahu authorized the provision of weapons to a specific group in southern Gaza. Opposition politicians have voiced concerns, arguing that this move could jeopardize Israeli security.
In a video message shared on social media, Netanyahu responded to these criticisms by asserting, "What’s wrong with this? It only saves the lives of Israeli soldiers," suggesting that publicizing the initiative could aid Hamas instead. The group in question is led by Yasser Abu Shabab, who claims to be an opposition force to Hamas with a mission to safeguard aid trucks entering Gaza. Critics, however, counter that the clan may be engaging in looting rather than providing protection.
The United Nations has already warned that a majority of Gaza’s population faces the risk of famine due to limited humanitarian aid. While Netanyahu seems unfazed by the criticism, his remarks and the circumstances surrounding the arming of the Abu Shabab clan could evolve into a significant political controversy.
Israeli defense sources have corroborated allegations made by opposition figure Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the Yisrael Beiteinu party. Lieberman contended that Netanyahu unilaterally approved these arms transfers without cabinet consultation, labeling the clan as "a group of criminals and felons" linked to the Islamic State. Reports indicate that the arms supplied include Kalashnikov rifles, some reportedly seized from Hamas.
Despite these claims, Yasser Abu Shabab has publicly rejected the notion that Israel is arming his group, stating that their weapons are outdated and sourced from local support. Tensions between Hamas and the Abu Shabab clan have reportedly escalated, with some sources suggesting repercussions for the clan's activities.
Netanyahu’s office maintains that the Israeli government is focused on defeating Hamas utilizing various strategies recommended by security leaders. Nonetheless, dissenting voices like Yair Golan of the Knesset suggest that this approach may pose a threat to national security. Golan criticized Netanyahu’s focus, asserting that the prime minister is creating what could become "a new ticking time-bomb in Gaza" rather than facilitating peace and security for Israeli citizens.
