Hundreds of flights have been grounded across Germany as airport staff participate in a nationwide strike over pay disputes, causing significant upheaval for travelers. The industrial action, initiated by the Verdi trade union, commenced unexpectedly at Hamburg Airport and quickly spread to other major airports, including Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin.
Passengers are being advised to refrain from heading to airports due to severe operational disruptions. Frankfurt Airport, which is the busiest in Germany, indicated that travelers would face significant difficulties boarding flights, with many scheduled flights already being canceled.
The industrial unrest has commenced amid an ongoing dispute regarding wage increases and improved working conditions. Reports suggest that as many as 500,000 travelers could be impacted by the cancellations, with Verdi seeking an 8% wage increase or a minimum of €350 more per month, alongside demands for higher bonuses and additional time off. However, employers have dismissed these proposals, claiming they are financially unviable.
Lufthansa, which operates a significant portion of flights out of Frankfurt, confirmed widespread delays and cancellations across its network, while Munich Airport announced a "greatly reduced flight schedule."
Officials from Hamburg Airport criticized the sudden strike action during the busy holiday season, stating it was inconsiderate for tens of thousands of unaffected travelers. Despite acknowledging the disruptions, Verdi representatives maintained that intense action is essential to achieve a favorable resolution.
In addition to the airport strikes, Verdi has organized further actions in waste collection across cities like Berlin, Essen, and Kiel, which have seen refuse left uncollected for days. Talks to resolve the ongoing disputes are set for Friday in Potsdam, as more strikes loom in other federal and municipal sectors.
