Iran and UK Engage in Diplomatic Tensions Over Spying Allegations
Iran and Britain have summoned each other's envoys following the arrest of three Iranian nationals charged with espionage in the UK.
In a significant escalation of tensions, both Iran and Britain have summoned each other's diplomats over espionage accusations. The controversy arose after three Iranian men, arrested in May, appeared in a London court facing charges of spying for the Iranian government.
The Iranian state news agency IRNA reported that the British chargé d'affaires was called in to respond to the "unjustified" arrests. In turn, the UK's Foreign Office summoned the Iranian ambassador, stating that national security is a primary concern and Iran must answer for its actions. The three accused men, who came to the UK between 2016 and 2022 seeking asylum, are believed to have conducted surveillance on journalists associated with the critical media outlet Iran International, which has been labeled a terrorist organization by the Iranian authorities.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the need for strengthening national security measures, highlighting the growing threats from foreign states operating on British soil. Concurrently, five other Iranian men were arrested in various UK locations as part of an ongoing counter-terrorism investigation, highlighting rising concerns about security and espionage activities in the UK by Iranian nationals. While four of those arrested were released, the investigation remains active.
