Pope Francis Shares Blessings Amid Health Concerns at Easter Mass

Despite health setbacks from a recent hospitalization, Pope Francis blessed thousands in St. Peter's Square during Easter Mass, emphasizing hope and unity amid global conflicts.

 

Pope Francis made a heartfelt appearance from his balcony at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City on Easter Sunday, blessing the vast crowd of tens of thousands who gathered to celebrate this significant occasion. Notably frail following a recent battle with life-threatening pneumonia, Francis greeted the faithful in a wheelchair, his voice raspy yet filled with warmth.

“Dear brothers and sisters, Happy Easter,” he proclaimed to a joyful reception. Following his greeting, Archbishop Diego Ravelli, a Vatican aide, delivered the traditional “Urbi et Orbi” address, a papal message meant for the city of Rome and the world at large, particularly focusing on the ongoing global conflicts and challenges.

After the address, the pope offered his blessing to the crowd, who responded with cheers of “Viva il Papa,” or “Long Live the Pope.” The gathering reflected a sense of unity and resilience among the faithful, celebrating hope during a season of renewal.

Pope Francis's appearance was preceded by a brief meeting with Vice President JD Vance, who was visiting Rome for the Easter holiday. The Vatican disclosed that after being discharged from the hospital on March 23, the pope was advised to rest for an extended period, avoiding large gatherings and situations that could expose him to germs, given the significant health risks he faced during his five-week hospital stay.
