The entertainment world mourns as George Wendt, renowned for his portrayal of Norm Peterson on Cheers, has passed away. Tributes from former colleagues and fans highlight his kindness and impact on television.


George Wendt, who captivated audiences as the beloved Norm Peterson on the iconic sitcom Cheers, has passed away at the age of 76. The actor's family reported that he died peacefully in his sleep at his home early Tuesday morning. Tributes from his former castmates flooded in as they expressed their deep sorrow over his loss.

Ted Danson, known for his role as bar owner Sam Malone, shared his heartbreak: “I am devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us.” Kelsey Grammer, who played Frasier, noted in a statement to Deadline, “Mourning is a private matter, but George was beloved by millions.” Wendt was a hallmark of Cheers, featuring in all 275 episodes from 1982 to 1993 and earning six consecutive Emmy nominations.

Also expressing their grief was Rhea Perlman, who called him "the sweetest, kindest man I ever met," saying, "I will miss him more than words can say." John's Ratzenberger remarked on the joyful moments they shared together. Beyond Cheers, Wendt appeared in films like Dreamscape and Forever Young, and even featured in Michael Jackson’s Black or White music video. Married since 1978 to fellow actor Bernadette Birkett, he was a father of three and uncle to Jason Sudeikis, star of Ted Lasso. Cheers Boston, the pub that inspired the show, honored Wendt by sharing a picture of Norm's famous barstool, stating, “To George: thank you for the laughs and the legacy you leave behind. You’ll always have a stool at our bar.” Wendt leaves behind a lasting legacy that will be cherished by fans and colleagues alike.
