British Tourist Faces Serious Charges in Namibia for Exploiting Indigenous Minors
A 65-year-old British man has been arrested in Namibia, accused of molesting minors from the San community and possessing explicit photographs.
A 65-year-old British tourist, Douglas Robert Brook, has been arrested in Namibia on serious charges of sexually abusing minors and taking nude photographs of them. The allegations state that Brook targeted young boys and girls from the indigenous San community while vacationing in the central Otjozondjupa region. He faces 38 charges, including rape, indecent assault, and child exploitation, according to local media reports.
Brook reportedly arrived in Namibia last week and was taken into custody on Sunday after allegedly luring 34 children with sweets and money to capture their nude photographs. Authorities have confirmed that he sexually abused 16 teenage girls and 14 boys, with some explicit images found on his confiscated camera.
The accused had a court appearance on Tuesday at the Grootfontein Magistrate court, located north of the capital, Windhoek, where he was denied bail and ordered to remain in custody. The case has been postponed to next month as the state prosecutor seeks additional time for investigation.
Information Minister Emma Theofelus stated that the tourist is being held in police custody without bail. The UK embassy in Namibia has reported that they have no further information at this time beyond news reports.
The Namibian Ministry of Environment and Tourism has condemned Brook's actions as "deeply disrespectful" to the San community's cultural heritage, asserting that exploiting or objectifying indigenous communities and their children for any reason is unacceptable.
Namibia is renowned for its stunning desert landscapes and rich cultural history, making it a popular destination for tourists. However, events like these raise concerns about the safety and treatment of local communities, particularly vulnerable children.
