Kenya's Deputy President Hospitalized Amid Impeachment Proceedings

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment trial faces uncertainty as he is hospitalized, sparking discussions about his future in government.

Gachagua, who is accused of multiple charges, including corruption and inciting divisions, was slated to defend himself in Senate but was declared unfit to attend.

Kenya is at a critical political juncture as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was scheduled to defend his case in an impeachment trial, which has now been clouded by his sudden hospitalization. Gachagua's attorney, Paul Muite, confirmed that the deputy president had been taken ill after appearing in Senate earlier in the day. The Senate has indefinitely postponed proceedings, anticipating his presence, but Speaker Amason Kingi warned that the trial cannot extend beyond Friday.

Gachagua, who faces an array of 11 accusations—ranging from corruption to undermining the government—pleaded not guilty upon the charges’ announcement. His impeachment was previously approved by an aggressive majority in the National Assembly. The current fallout with President William Ruto has destabilized their alliance just two years into their joint term; disputes escalated after Gachagua criticized the president over diplomatic missteps regarding civil unrest.

The evidence against Gachagua includes claims of his wealth amassed through illicit dealings and controversial remarks that allegedly promote divisiveness based on ethnicity. Lawmaker Mwengi Mutuse, who initiated the impeachment motion, underscored the "extraordinary" nature of Gachagua's misconduct.

As the Senate proceedings remain on hold, uncertainty looms over Gachagua’s political future, and if impeached, a challenge is expected from him. Speculations of potential successors within the ruling party have emerged, indicating potential volatility in Kenya’s political landscape. Observers brace for impending developments in this gripping saga.
