UK Responds Firmly Against Hong Kong's Bounty for Activist Arrests

The UK government speaks out against Hong Kong's monetary rewards for information on pro-democracy activists living abroad.

In an alarming turn of events, Hong Kong officials have offered substantial rewards for information leading to the arrest of pro-democracy activists residing in the UK. The UK government has vehemently condemned this act, labeling it as a clear case of transnational repression and an explicit affront to human rights.

The Hong Kong authorities have announced cash incentives ranging from $25,000 to $125,000 for individuals who provide information about 19 pro-democracy activists accused of violating China’s controversial national security law, enacted in 2020 as a direct response to the protests in 2019. The UK's Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper jointly issued a statement describing this bounty as "another example of transnational repression," emphasizing that the UK will continue to support the rights of Hongkongers living in Britain.

Individuals on the target list include prominent activists such as Nathan Law, a former lawmaker in Hong Kong, and other key figures tied to the pro-democracy movement. In response to these monetary offers, Nathan Law has expressed heightened concern for personal safety, noting that the introduction of the bounties has made life more perilous for him and his compatriots.

The UK government has undertaken steps to dismantle the extradition links with Hong Kong in light of these aggressive tactics, ensuring that Hongkongers who have sought refuge in the UK can continue to do so safely. They highlighted their unwavering commitment to human rights and the protection of freedoms, assuring that efforts are being made to sever ties with Hong Kong’s extradition policies.

This latest move follows previous announcements of bounties targeting additional activists and reinforces the ongoing battle over human rights in Hong Kong, where pro-democracy advocates continue to face severe backlash from authorities. As tensions rise, the UK remains a sanctuary for those fleeing oppression, pledging to safeguard their rights and security.

In conclusion, as Hong Kong’s political landscape continues to deteriorate, the global community watches closely. The UK’s firm stance sends a message of solidarity to activists striving for democracy amid governmental instability and repression.
