In the early hours of Tuesday, a catastrophic event unfolded at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, as a roof collapse occurred during a live performance by renowned merengue singer Rubby Pérez. Initial reports confirm that the disaster has claimed the lives of at least 79 individuals, with over 150 others sustaining injuries. The incident is particularly tragic as it has also claimed the life of Octavio Dotel, a former Major League Baseball pitcher, who tragically succumbed to his injuries whilst being transported to the hospital.

Witnesses described a scene of chaos as people were enjoying the concert when the ceiling suddenly gave way. Video footage from within the club captured moments of attendees dancing and enjoying the music just before the collapse. Eyewitness accounts suggest that shortly before the roof fell, an audience member noticed something wrong with the ceiling.

The event has left the Dominican community in mourning, as local officials confirm that prominent figures, including Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Monte Cristi province and sister of former baseball star Nelson Cruz, were among those trapped beneath the rubble. The Emergency Operations Centre's director, Juan Manuel Méndez, expressed optimism about the possibility of finding survivors, as rescue teams comb through the debris with hopes of locating those who may still be alive.
