Billy Joel Shares Positive Update After Rare Brain Disorder Diagnosis
The legendary musician discusses his condition and journey towards recovery on Bill Maher's podcast.
Billy Joel, the celebrated singer-songwriter, recently provided an encouraging update regarding his health during an appearance on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast. This comes following his diagnosis with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain condition identified earlier this year.
The five-time Grammy winner shared that the ongoing management of his condition is a work in progress, but he feels “good.” Joel candidly addressed the terminology of his diagnosis, saying, "I feel good; they keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I'm feeling."
In May, Joel was compelled to cancel several concert dates after doctors advised him that his condition had worsened due to recent performances. NPH, as described by the NHS, is an unusual condition chiefly affecting individuals over 60 years of age, characterized by fluid accumulation in the brain, leading to potential challenges such as impaired vision, hearing, and mobility.
In a heartfelt message shared on his Instagram, Joel mentioned that he is undergoing specific physical therapy while committing to prioritize his health. His wife, Alexis Joel, expressed gratitude for the prompt diagnosis and excellent care they received, instilling hope for a swift recovery.
Due to his health concerns, Joel has postponed 17 performances planned for North America and Europe through 2025 and 2026, including high-profile shows at Murrayfield in Edinburgh and Anfield in Liverpool.
The iconic artist, known for classics like "Uptown Girl" and "Piano Man," has kept a rigorous touring schedule in recent years, culminating in a record-holding ten-year residency at Madison Square Garden, concluding last February. Joel's last live performance was notably marked by a fall during the show, prompting further medical evaluations and a focus on recovery.
As he navigates this health journey, Joel’s resilience and positivity continue to shine through, resonating with fans and supporters around the world.
