Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is currently hospitalized after sustaining injuries during an official overseas trip to Luxembourg, her office announced on Friday. Reports suggest that the 84-year-old politician injured her hip after tripping and falling while attending a formal event, as disclosed by unauthorized sources to U.S. media outlets.
According to Pelosi's spokesperson, Ian Krager, she is "receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals" and is motivated to return home to the U.S. shortly. Despite the injury, Pelosi continues to fulfill her duties from the hospital.
Pelosi, who represents California in the House, was part of a bipartisan Congressional delegation in Luxembourg to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the historic Battle of the Bulge. Her spokesperson noted that she would sadly miss participating in additional events connected to the anniversary, which features veterans and military officials.
Pelosi has had a venerable political career, spanning seven presidential administrations and spanning over two decades in leadership roles. After serving as House Speaker from 2007 to 2011, she reclaimed the position in 2019 and served until her resignation in 2023. Nonetheless, she remains an active member of the House, having recently been elected to another two-year term.
Interestingly, this incident follows closely on the heels of a similar mishap involving incoming Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who recently suffered a sprained wrist and facial cuts after falling at the U.S. Capitol.
