Tragic Rafting Incident Claims Life of British Woman in French Alps

In a heartbreaking incident, a British woman has died following a white-water rafting mishap on the Guisane river in Briancon, southeastern France. The accident occurred shortly after noon local time on Saturday as she fell from her raft during an organized expedition. Local prosecutor Marion Lozac'hmeur reported that the victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was later discovered on the riverbank and airlifted to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries the same evening.

The rafting trip was taking place on a particularly challenging section of the river known as "the wallet." The regional authorities, along with the Foreign Office, have confirmed the woman's death and are in touch with local police. An investigation into the incident has been launched, focusing on "involuntary manslaughter," and an autopsy is set to be performed.

This incident raises concerns about the safety measures in adventurist activities in the region, where both the Guisane and nearby Durance rivers are popular rafting destinations, especially during the spring melt. In a similar tragedy last year, a British man lost his life while kayaking on the Durance after facing difficulties during a heavy snowmelt period.
