The recent surge in hostilities between Iran and Israel has plunged Palestinian communities into turmoil, with many finding themselves on the frontline of the conflict. Since hostilities reignited on Friday, over 80 pieces of missile debris have descended upon residential areas in the West Bank, according to reports from Palestinian authorities.
One affected civilian, Alaa Jaradat, a construction worker, recounted a harrowing experience where the remnants of intercepted Iranian missiles struck his home, injuring his children. Unlike their Israeli counterparts, who have access to bomb shelters and emergency alerts, Jaradat’s family had no protective resources, leaving them vulnerable amidst the chaos. "We’ve had no help from the government, not even a warning,” lamented Mr. Jaradat, sharing his fears for his family's safety.
The onslaught has heightened existing grievances against both the Israeli military occupation and the Palestinian Authority, which governs a portion of the West Bank. According to Nael Al-Azza, a spokesman for Palestinian emergency services, the government has failed to provide the necessary guidance to civilians during these strikes, only advising them to avoid unexploded ordnance.
As the violence escalates, the Israeli military continues its operations across the West Bank, compounding the plight of the Palestinian residents. Checkpoints and roadblocks hinder emergency services, complicating efforts to transport the injured, as illustrated by Ahmed Jibreel, head of the Palestinian Red Crescent, who emphasized the obstacles ambulances face in reaching those in desperate need.
In an atmosphere of escalating panic, residents have flocked to gas stations for fuel, fearing shortages should the situation deteriorate further. Amidst the tension, a dark humor has emerged: “What’s the point of stockpiling fuel if you can’t move?” Amidst the fear and uncertainty, one thing is clear—Palestinians are enduring the harsh realities of being trapped in a conflict they did not choose.
