The U.S. military has announced that it struck and disabled an unladen oil tanker that was heading toward Iran, as part of Washington’s naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Central Command (Centcom) disclosed that a U.S. aircraft fired a Hellfire missile into the tanker’s engine room after the crew refused repeated warnings.
In a video released by Centcom, a splash is visible on the tanker’s hull at the moment the missile hit. While Iranian authorities have not issued any statements, global experts are flagging significant environmental risks associated with the incident. An oil explosion or spill could release toxic hydrocarbons into a fragile marine ecosystem, potentially contaminating the waters that are already strained by shipping traffic and water‑borne diseases.
