Western Europe faces a severe heatwave that has claimed 40 lives in France and pushed temperatures into record highs, prompting widespread public health measures.

Western Europe is under a severe heatwave, with temperatures in cities like Nice soaring between 30 °C and 35 °C (86 °F–95 °F). Since 18 June, 40 people have died in France alone due to the extreme heat. Governments have issued high‑heat alerts and mobilised water stations, rest zones and support for vulnerable populations. The heatwave has escalated energy consumption, strained water resources and threatened agriculture. Climate scientists urge rapid adaptation measures and accelerated mitigation efforts to protect citizens and ecosystems.

Western European cities such as Nice have seen soaring temperatures between 30 °C and 35 °C (86 °F–95 °F), triggering a very high heat alert from local authorities.

Since the 18 th of June, French officials report that 40 people have lost their lives in heat‑related incidents, a stark reminder of the lethal risk these extreme temperatures pose.

Across the region, governments have deployed heat‑alert systems, set up cooling centers, increased water‑point availability, and offered additional support for the elderly and vulnerable.
