IAEA to Inspect Iran under New War‑Deal Agreement

In a decisive move toward nuclear transparency, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) declared that inspectors will soon visit Iran’s nuclear sites as part of a preliminary peace agreement signed last week with the United States.
“The inspections will indeed take place,” stated IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to reporters in Japan, adding that details—dates, procedures and locations—would be finalized “very soon.”
The deal, which explicitly includes the down‑blending of Iran’s highly enriched uranium under IAEA supervision, moves forward after long‑standing diplomatic tensions. Iran’s deputy foreign minister, however, warned that access to damaged facilities will only be addressed after a final agreement with the U.S. and the lifting of sanctions.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been traveling through Gulf nations, meeting leaders in the United Arab Emirates and heading to Kuwait and Bahrain to push the accord. The U.S. has also lifted its naval blockade on Iranian ports, allowing commercial shipping to resume through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil transport.
Brent crude oil prices fell below $75 for the first time since the regional conflict erupted, reflecting a temporary easing of market volatility. Ships have already been patrolling the strait under a temporary evacuation scheme that aids sailors stranded by the war.
Historical context underscores the stakes: before the 2025 conflict, Iran possessed around 440kg of 60% enriched uranium, a quantity that could be refined to weapons-grade material. The 2015 nuclear deal that Iran signed with the U.S. and five other powers mandated continuous IAEA scrutiny in exchange for sanctions relief—an arrangement that was later abandoned by President Trump in 2018, prompting a renewed cycle of enrichment disputes.
The 14‑point memorandum of understanding now sets a 60‑day framework for negotiating a final deal, promising “mutually agreed” mechanisms for dismantling enriched stockpiles on site. The IAEA’s recent report indicates that inspectors have visited Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant but have yet to access the more sensitive, bomb‑damaged installations, leaving critical data on stockpile size and composition undisclosed.
