**Gérard Depardieu Receives Suspended Sentence in Sexual Assault Case**

French actor Gérard Depardieu found guilty of sexual assault against two women, receiving an 18-month suspended sentence after trial.

The Paris court determined that evidence presented by the victims was credible, while Depardieu plans to appeal, asserting his innocence amidst growing scrutiny within the film industry.

In a landmark ruling, renowned French actor Gérard Depardieu has been found guilty of sexually assaulting two women during the filming of "Les Volets Verts" in September 2021. The court in Paris rendered an 18-month suspended sentence for the 76-year-old actor, emphasizing the credibility of the victims’ testimonies.

Both plaintiffs accused Depardieu of inappropriate touching and using lewd language while on set. One of the women, set dresser Amélie, expressed her relief post-verdict, describing it as a "victory" not only for herself but for all women who have faced similar violations in the film industry. “It’s a major step forward,” she conveyed to reporters.

Despite the guilty verdict, Depardieu denied the allegations and has signaled plans to appeal. His attorney claimed that the women's testimonies lacked consistency and labeled them “more militants than lawyers,” indicating a bias against their defense. The court, however, concluded that their claims were compelling, and they ordered Depardieu to pay €1,000 (about £840) each in compensation for mental suffering endured during the trial process.

The verdict arrives shortly before the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, raising questions about accountability in the entertainment industry, especially regarding powerful individuals like Depardieu. The judge highlighted that an individual’s fame doesn't exempt them from legal scrutiny. Additionally, this marked Depardieu's first trial related to sexual assault allegations, although he faces further accusations, including a separate alleged rape case that could be brought to trial in the future.

Prosecutor Laurent Guy reminded the court that one can be a talented artist while also committing crimes, affirming the importance of justice in these matters. Meanwhile, the female plaintiffs' legal representative, Claude Vincent, described Depardieu’s behavior as a reflection of misogyny prevalent within certain circles of the film industry.

As the fallout from the trial continues, Depardieu has already returned to work, collaborating with fellow actor Fanny Ardant on a new film project. Despite the legal battle, he expressed a fascination with courtroom proceedings, indicating a critical introspection about his life and choices amidst the backdrop of an ever-evolving societal landscape concerning gender relations and justice.
